A month ago I spoke to my local
religeous representative, and the topic of jobs came up. He said that he would call someone who specializes in helping people find jobs, and see what he could do. Two weeks later I had not been contacted. So this last weekend he called me in to see him, and he handed me some information on employment. I went to the web site, and found additional job opportunities.
I set up a
spreadsheet of jobs in my area of Utah, and collected about 18 different job listings over a four month period. Almost all of the jobs were entry level jobs, and didn't really offer me much, in terms of getting a good wage. Some jobs were at fast food places, others were at stores like K-Mart, Wall*Mart, and so forth. There a few jobs that did offer reasonable wages for basic entry level work.
So I printed out this spreadsheet, and highlighted the jobs that really did appeal to me. Next I went to MapQuest (spelling?), and printed basic
maps for each of the jobs listed on my paper. I placed each map in the order that it appeared on the paper. I was ready to find a job, however, it was after 10-pm, so I had to wait until the next day to begin my search...
After I went for my daily two mile walk, I showered, ate some salad and beans, and off I went to the nearest future employer. The place is a plumbing supply business, which handles thousands and thousands of
plumbing supplies, toilets, sinks, pipes, tubing, and misc. other stuff.
I went to the main building of the plumbing supply business, and asked for an
application for employment, and went home. I then scanned the application into the computer, filled it out, and then printed out two copies. It didn't look too bad, so I signed one copy, and went back the next day, with the application, and my resume and employment history.
When I went back the main building, to drop off my application, and I was told that I needed to go to
building number 5. It was around the corner, turn right then left, go straight, watch out for BIG semi-trucks, and find the front door of building number 5. So I did. Once inside I told the receptionist that I was here to drop off my application, and she asked me to wait while the interviewer became available. So I did.
After about 30 minutes of waiting, I was almost ready to call it quits, and head to the next business. Just then I was told that the interviewer was ready to see me. The elevators weren't working, so I walked upstairs to the second floor. We talked about the different jobs that I would be good for, and settled on
three different jobs: Warehouse Worker, Retail Clerk, or Internet Employee.
Since I had Gastric Bypass in Sept. 2005, it seemed that working in the warehouse would be good for me, if I wanted to reduce my weight. The interviewer
took me down the stairs, out the back of building number 5, and over to building number 4. Each building is about the size of Costco or Sams Club building...
I was introduced to the foreman of building number 4, and was
given a tour of that building. He told me that the heavy items were on the ground floor, the lesser heavy items on the second floor, and the really really light weight stuff on the third floor. There were BIG hydraulic jacks to lift the heavy stuff up and down. They were clearly under staffed, and they needed help.
After the tour, I was send back to building number 5, for a follow-up interview, and I was offered the warehouse job. We discussed wages, and hours, and
I did accept the offer for employment! Hot diggity dog! I start on next Monday, and will begin training. Wish me luck.
